Fingerstick Meters and CGMs: Know What Each One Measures

A blood glucose meter reads a drop of blood from a fingerstick. It returns a point-in-time number — a snapshot of your glucose level at that exact moment, whenever you choose to test. Data appears only when you test.
A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) uses a small sensor worn on the body and measures glucose in the interstitial fluid — the fluid around cells — at frequent intervals through the day and night. Instead of a snapshot you trigger, a CGM produces a stream of readings, including overnight and between meals. That difference in data frequency is the core trade-off: a meter is simple and you control it; a CGM gives far more information but is a wearable system with its own costs, upkeep, and learning curve.
Neither approach is universally "better." The right one depends on your treatment plan, how often you need data, your comfort with wearing a sensor, and — critically — what your insurer and care team will support. And before you weigh those factors, you need a reliable way to judge the claims each product makes.
The Four Checks Before You Buy or Request a Prescription

Check 1: Is it cleared by the FDA for your intended use?
Approval or clearance is not a performance ranking, but it is the legal floor. Before you trust any device — especially a wearable or noninvasive option — verify its status against FDA databases such as the 510(k) and De Novo records. Look not only for the device name but for the approved intended use: a device cleared for one purpose may not be cleared for the way you plan to use it. If a company makes clearance hard to find, treat that as a warning sign, not a detail to chase later.
Check 2: What does the accuracy evidence actually show?
Manufacturers may quote a margin-of-error figure or a MARD (mean absolute relative difference) percentage. Conceptually, these numbers describe how close a device's readings typically come to a reference measurement; a lower figure generally means tighter agreement. But a single marketing statistic is not enough. Ask where the number comes from, whether independent testing — not just the company's own lab — confirmed it, and whether accuracy was demonstrated in conditions similar to yours. If the evidence is unpublished or the wording is vague, keep looking. Accuracy matters because your readings become the raw material for conversations with your clinician; a number that is hard to trust makes those conversations harder.
Check 3: What will it really cost after insurance?
This is where good devices stall in real life. Coverage varies by plan, region, and benefit type. A glucose meter may be covered under a pharmacy benefit, while a CGM can route through a medical or durable-medical-equipment benefit, and the two often behave very differently. Call your insurer's member-services line and ask three questions: Is this device on my formulary? Which benefit covers it? What is my expected out-of-pocket cost? Then confirm the numbers with the pharmacy or supplier before paying anything. Do not let a discount or subscription offer push you into paying before coverage is confirmed. Coverage can also change at plan renewal, so note the date and representative's name when you call.
Check 4: Does your care team support this device?
Many monitors require a prescription, and most need some level of clinician involvement. Confirm whether a prescription is required, whether the device can share data with your clinic's system, and whether your care team is willing to actually use that data. A device your clinician cannot or will not review is a weaker choice than a simpler one they will engage with.
Red Flags in Monitoring Marketing
Some marketing deserves immediate skepticism:
- Guarantees: any promise that a device will produce specific outcomes or "fix" your glucose control.
- "No fingersticks ever" phrasing that misleads about how the product works or what it is cleared to do.
- Cure-adjacent language that contradicts established scientific consensus. The same content standards that prohibit harmful health claims — including Google's Publisher Policies — are a reasonable yardstick for what responsible claims look like.
- Missing accuracy disclosures or clearance references on the product page.
- Pressure to pay before coverage is confirmed.
If a product page reads more like a pitch than a technical spec, that is exactly when verification matters most.
